Are you guilty of leaning on the recession?

April 23rd, 2009

I attended a very motivational event yesterday evening with two wonderful speakers, James Sweetman, Business Coach (www.jamessweetman.com) and Krishna De  an award winning digital marketing pofessional  (www.krishnade.com) The topic of the event was “Staying up in Down Times” I must admit I did not go to the event to get motivated or to find ways to stay up in these difficult times but I went becasue I was interested in seeing James speak, and learning more about online marketing from Krishna.

The evening was enlightening, motivational and great fun and that was even before we got to the excellent material that was conveyed by the speakers. But what I gained most from the evening was the realisation that I too am guilty of leaning on the recession. So many people out there are not moving forward and taking steps to improve because they are using the excuse of the recession. “It’s not going to work in this climate” “All budgets are cut so they won’t have any money to buy my product/service” and my own personal voice “If I don’t make the sale, that’s ok because there is a recession on “! Well do you know what ? It’s not ok, yes this is the time when we have to work extra hard to make those sales and it is a time we have to communicate more efficiently than ever to get our message heard, but this doesn’t give us an excuse not to do our jobs to the best of our ability and lets face it we haven’t had to do that in the last couple of years.

So from now on instead of sitting back and saying that’s ok there’s a recession, I am going to take responsibility for my actions and ask myself some powerful questions. What can I do better next time? Was my message communicated clearly? Did I offer them a product or service they needed ? Did I listen sufficiently to their requirements? and the list goes on…

To rise above this recession and stand for excellence don’t use it as an excuse rather leverage it as the best education and challenge you have ever met. Are you up for it?
